Must do’s at AfriCamps at Pat Busch

A stay at AfriCamps is not just about glamping. It is a chance to experience the surroundings, taste the local produce and simply unwind in nature. AfriCamps at Pat Busch offers the most breathtaking mountain views and plenty of ways to explore the mountain up close. Get closer to the fynbos, streams, mountain dams and birdlife. Swimming

During our hot summer days nothing is better than going for a dip. The salt water pool is a favourite among the kids. Keep an eye on them from the sun beds while soaking up the rather magnificent mountain views (you can’t really go anywhere at Pat Busch without being surrounded by the majestic Langeberg Mountains.) Get a spot of shade beneath our sun covers, stretch out on a sun bed and get lost in a good book.

Thrill seekers might prefer to cool off in our farm dam after a hike or mountain bike ride. Our farm dam is located beyond the tents at the top of the property. You will also find row boats and kayaks available for rent. Try your luck at catching Bass and Tilipia (strictly catch-and-release).

Mountain Biking

Rent a bike for a half-day or a full-day to explore the farm and the surrounding area. How does a wine tour by mountain bike sound? A 30km route takes you past some of our neighbouring wine farms for tastings or meals. Book your bike with us in advance (helmets included).

Hiking

When arriving at Pat Busch, you can already spot some of the trails leading up the mountain. These can be quite intimidating, but fear not, there are trails for all fitness levels! These hiking trails are not open to the public, so you can hike in complete privacy. Make sure you pack enough water, power snacks, good hiking boots, sunscreen, hat and sunglasses.

Guided Day Hike

Duration: 2,5 – 3 hours

An early start is advisable because in high summer months the temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees. A qualified field guide will walk with you through the area. During this hike he will tell you everything that you want to know about the local fauna and flora! *Minimum of 2 adults. Subject to prior arrangement and availability.

Self-Guided Hiking Trails

There are also three self guided hiking trails on the property. On arrival at AfriCamps you can find information on the various hikes inside the welcome book in your tent. !

Middelrug Trail

Duration: 3 – 4 hours

The hike begins at the farm dam just beyond the tents. This is a fantastic trail to hike in the morning, not only because of the cool weather but also for the sunrise. The hike will return along the stream and kloof. The hike is quite steep but other than that not difficult.

Hermit’s Ridge Trail

Duration: 2 – 3 hours

Hermit’s Ridge Trail is named after the legend of an old hermit who used to live in the Langeberg Mountains. The story goes that he hoarded a fortune in Kruger Rands and the secret of this treasure was lost when he died. Start at the gate near Oak Cottage where the trail takes you deeper through the Poplar Forest where, if the legend is true, the treasure can still be found. This trail from bottom to top should take about 2-3 hours, but don’t forget to add on the return time for returning via Karin’s trail.

Karin Trail

Duration: 2 – 3 hours

This beautiful hike is named after Pat Busch’s wife, Karin Busch. You can choose to continue this hike from the top of Hermit’s Ridge Trail, or follow the trail there & back. This popular trail follows the mountain streams along shaded valleys. Indigenous trees, boulders and the gurgling stream are your companions.

Watch the sunset

Sunsets at AfriCamps at Pat Busch Mountain Reserve are simply one of the best sunsets you will ever see. Watching the sun disappear behind the mountains, see the sky change colour from orange to pink. There are simply no words to describe it! Make yourself comfortable in one of the comfy deck chairs outside and watch the sun slowly going down. (A glass of Robertson’s finest wine will make it even more special.)

Guided Wine Tour

Last but not least, Pat Busch Mountain Reserve offers a guided wine tour which starts at the property. This tour shows you around the beautiful sights and tastes of the Robertson Wine Valley. And no worries about driving! Your chauffeur will drive you all the way to the world-famous wine cellars. Lunch, wine tastings and an underground cellar tour is included. If you want to extend your tour with a boat trip along the Breede Rivier, your guide is happy to add that in the tour. All tours can be tailor made to suit your preferences. A minimum of 2 persons is required for a guided tour. *Subject to availability and prior arrangement.

Summer is here and we can’t wait for the holidays to be in full swing! AfriCamps at Kam’Bati truly comes alive in the holiday season when families take the open roads to go glamping. Kam’Bati is especially well-loved among families and there’s plenty of reasons why.

AfriCamps at Kam’Bati is situated on an Overberg farm, Jubileeskraal, about 20km west of Swellendam, perfectly located to kick off your Garden Route holiday and only a 2.5-hour drive from Cape Town. Whether you join us for your first or last Garden Route stop, AfriCamps at Kam’Bati is definitely worth a visit. With its three swimming pools and a majestic river, Kam’Bati is one of our favourite places to cool off during these hot summer days.

Stay cool by the pool

After a long drive, drop your bags in the tent, turn the aircon on (yes, there is air-conditioning in the tents!) and relax for a few minutes while making yourself at home. When you’re ready – go for a dip in one of our pools!

There’s a pool especially for the toddlers with 3 small slides. The pool is shallow and perfect for the little ones to play for hours. For the older kids, we have a slightly deeper pool with 3 longer slides. Sorry parents, these slides are only for kids. If braving the steps slowly and calmly, or getting lost in a book on a lounger NEXT to the pool is more your thing, we’ve got a pool for you too.River Adventures

The Breede and Sonderend Rivers meet on the property which means plenty of river fun awaits. Rent a canoe at reception or bring your own. Pack a picnic and your fishing rod and spend the whole afternoon on the river.

The kids will love the rush of adrenaline from jumping off the jetty or swinging from the rope into the river (remember to check the water level first.)

Kam’Bati Putt-Putt course

After a day full of swimming and splashing, see if you can beat your family in an exciting game of putt-putt. Our 8-hole course is a perfect way to spend your summer days on the property.

Add a little twist by setting special rules. The winner doesn’t have to do the dishes, right? Time to start practicing those putting skills!

Traditional AfriCamps Braai

Light the fire for a traditional South African braai. Kam’Bati offers great braai packs with something in it for the whole family. You can enjoy a 200g Rump steak, sausage, chicken kebab, beetroot salad, potato or pasta salad with a garlic & cheese roll, but remember to pre-order when you book your stay.

72 hours in Wellington, Cape Winelands

We are very excited to announce that our 8th AfriCamps location has opened right in the heart of the Cape Winelands! AfriCamps at Doolhof in Wellington opened on 14 December 2018 we happy glampers have been making memories ever since. Visitors from around the world return to South Africa time and time again to visit their favourite holiday destination, the Cape Winelands, but many may not know that Wellington is at the heart of it. Quieter and less explored than its busy and touristy siblings Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, Wellington makes the perfect Cape Winelands escape.

Within an hour’s drive from Cape Town, at the foot of the Groenberg Mountain you will find this friendly town. Renowned for beautiful Cape Dutch homesteads, its picturesque environment, gardens and wineries, Wellington will instantly creep into your heart with its small-town charm.

Capetonians frequently visit the area for the historical Bain’s Kloof Pass’ breathtaking views, indigenous flora and fauna, hiking trails among crystal-clear rivers, and mountain biking – an adventure seeker’s dream destination. AfriCamps at Doolhof is set within the award-winning Doolhof Wine Estate, a short drive from the picturesque town of Wellington and at the end of Bovlei Road, a well-known area for mountain biking and wine tasting.

After your drive past numerous wine farms, you’ll probably be in the mood for some wine, right? Doolhof’s wine tasting room is situated in an original wagon house built in the late 19th century. Unwind with an award-winning red paired with a platter while the kids explore the property with its cows, horses and labyrinth.

Still in the mood to relax after some delicious wines? We understand! Why don’t you buy a bottle of wine at The Tasting Room, sip and soak in our brand new hot tubs? Yes, you read it right, we’ve added hot tubs to all AfriCamps at Doolhof tents – included in your rate! These tubs will be filled with water from our mountains via our farm dam. Simply start the fire in the coil with your starter pack of blue gum wood, leave the lid on and let the brilliant design do the work. Keep stirring the water to spead the heat evenly, give it about an hour to get very warm, get in and relax!

Friday evening

Time to light the fire for an original South African Braai at your tent to kick start your weekend in true glamping style. AfriCamps at Doolhof provides braai packs with something delicious for the whole family. End off your first night by star gazing, braaiing marshmallows and telling stories around the fire.

Saturday morning

Rise and shine – it’s your second day in Wellington! Start off your day with some adventure – one of the things Wellington is famous for. Whether you prefer mountain biking or hiking trails, Wellington is your playground.

If the Cape Epic Cycle Tour makes its way onto Doolhof – you know it’s gotta be good mountain biking terrain. From professional riders to kids going for their first big ride will find a trail that is suitable. Bring your own, or rent bikes right here on the farm. Don’t forget to get your Wild Boar Trail map from the Doolhof tasting room!

These are our favourites rides:

Potbelly kids ride: This route starts and finishes at Val Du Charron where beginners can experience the 3.3km trail through vineyards and flat roads.
Cross country: This route starts and ends at Doolhof Wine Estate. The route is 4.3km long for intermediate to advanced mountain bikers.
Flat Hog: This 42km trail is for beginners to intermediate riders. The trail will take 1.5 – 3 hours and will take you through beautiful open gravel roads and small sections of jeep track.
Scout loop: The Scout Loop is a beautiful trail for intermediate to advanced riders with an ascent of 928m. The trail is 20.5km long and takes 1-3 hours.
Wild Boar: This 42.3km trail has an ascent of 1495m. It is loved by intermediate to advanced riders.
Warthog: The Warthog trail is 36.3km long and will take 2.5 – 5 hours of your time. It will take you to a high top with an ascent of 1229m.
Porcupine: The Porcupine Loop is a short ride for adventurous intermediate riders and will take 1.5 – 3 hours.
Hedgehog: The Hedgehog Loop is 16.4km trail with a 679m ascent and fit for intermediate riders.

Not big on cycling? There is also enough to discover on the property! Meandering through the estate is the picturesque Kromme River. There is no better way to start your day than with a walk along the tranquil river. Follow the path and stop for a picnic along the way.

For a longer walk, you can also enjoy a 5km hike through the vineyards which also starts at Doolhof. The farm is known for its mysterious hills and valleys, and is also home to many small mammals, including buck, porcupine, baboons and even the shy leopard.

During these walks, you don’t have to stress about making sandwiches on your way. Just order one of the delicious picnic baskets at Doolhof, these baskets are available upon prior reservation.

For the less adventurous, take in the beautiful Cape Winelands surroundings without breaking a sweat. Head to Langkloof Roses where you can spend the morning enjoying cakes and bakes, tea and scones, cheese and preserves among the freshly cut blooms. Take a stroll on the beautiful rose-covered property before heading on to your next stop.

Saturday afternoon

After brunch, explore the variety of wine farms and distilleries in the area. Taste delicious wines on award-winning wine estates like Dunstone, Val du Charron, Welvanpas or Bosman, many of which offer country-style lunches and snacks. Taste world-class organic Brandy, Grappa, Port and Cabernet Sauvignon from Upland Organic Wine & Brandy Estate or take a distillery tour at James Sedgwick Distillery where grain and malt whiskies are distilled.

Late afternoon

Move on to Bontebok Ridge Reserve where you can take guided game drives spotting species such as Bontebok (found exclusively in the Cape), Eland, Zebra from the Quagga Breeding Project, Wildebeest, Springbuck, Duiker, Grysbok, Grey Rhebok, Sable Antelope, Gemsbock. The guide has remarkable knowledge of the area and its wonderful biodiversity. Booking essential.

Saturday evening

When night falls, head back to Bovlei Road for a family-friendly dinner at The Stone Kitchen, a popular family bistro on Dunstone Country Estate. The Stone Kitchen offers classic home-style dishes to enjoy with their selection of cellar wines. The Shiraz, Merlot and special Rosé come highly recommended. Kids will love the indoor and outdoor play areas. The Stone kitchen is also a great lunch spot.

Sunday morning

Start your final day in the Cape Winelands with AfriCamps’ delicious cook-your-own breakfast basket brought to your tent in the morning. Cook locally sourced produce and enjoy it on the spacious deck. Check-out time is at 10:00, leaving plenty of time to keep exploring the beautiful town.

For the historians among us, the Wellington Museum features not only the cultures, artefacts, traditional tools, musical instruments and jewellery of various African ethnic groups but also prides itself in having ties with countries as far afield as America, England, Scotland, France and the Netherlands. It exhibits Stone-Age artefacts, a major collection of Egyptian artefacts and tells the stories of various pioneers who made their mark on the history of South Africa. Visit the Museum and discover the age-old mysteries of Africa.

A final family friendly activity is Quenti’s alpaca farm. Take a look in the mill and see how alpaca fibre is processed into beautiful scarfs, socks and rugs.

Head to Oude Wellington for their 3-course Sunday lunch. Friendly staff, tasty wines and hearty South African meals await!

Take one last detour. If you came from Cape Town you missed out on driving through the world-famous Bainskloof Pass. We strongly suggest you make the trip before heading home. Today, the 26km Bainskloof Pass is recognised as a national monument and makes for a beautiful drive with stunning views over the Boland. Our locations boast the most scenic tracks for an early morning ladies run. And what better motivation than knowing breakfast will be waiting… Happily prepared by dad and the kids.

2. Enjoy breakfast with friends and family

All AfriCamps locations offer sumptious breakfast baskets including the best fresh produce and dairy for you to prepare. Breakfast baskets differ slightly between our locations, as each location fills their baskets with the freshest local produce.

Freshly baked muffins, muesli, fresh fruit, yoghurt, juice, preserves, eggs, bacon, sausage, freshly baked bread, fresh milk, coffee and rusks are some of the items you can expect to find in your basket.

Grab a deck chair, catch some rays and relax! The deck is the perfect tanning spot, but depending on your location, you can relax and catch a tan next to a swimming pool or find a quiet riverside spot. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours – the hot African sun can be brutal in summer.

The story behind SA’s favourite glamping brand

How did two Dutchies create South Africa’s favourite boutique camping brand? The Dutch travel magazine, Oog Voor Afrika recently interviewed AfriCamps’ co-owners Jeroen van Rootselaar and Manou Bleumink on the origins of AfriCamps and their road to success. We couldn’t keep this story from our local community, so, here it is! The story of how two Dutch entrepreneurs revolutionised glamping as we know it in South Africa.

A NEW START

After arriving in South Africa, Manou Bleumink and his girlfriend Willemijn started a homeshare B&B in their rented house to help make ends meet. The demand for student accommodation grew and so they founded Cape Town Rocks. Their successful company filled a gap in the market for the rental of beautiful apartments, houses and student rooms. This was their first encounter with the tourism industry in South Africa.

Jeroen van Rootselaar and his partner Katelijne arrived in South Africa in 2006 with two backpacks, some surf equipment and a website about internships. As a student, Jeroen completed an internship in Cape Town and fell head over heals for the city. The couple saw a gap in the market after their own internship in the Mother City and started the internship agency, 4exchange.

The two companies overlapped in the market for student housing, but after a chance meeting over a beer, Jeroen and Manou clicked instantly.

Soon we started brainstorming about starting a business together and, coincidentally we both thought of different forms of tents and camping gear. That’s how AfriCamps was founded.

THE CHALLENGE: AFRICAMPS

Manou: ‘We both saw a glamping trend starting in Europe. At various farms and campsites, you suddenly saw cheerfully decorated “safari” tents. That was funny to see for the Dutch in South Africa because the original form of the safari tent really comes from here. The tents in Europe, with their double bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom, however, seemed more like canvas cottages suitable for the whole family. Our idea was to import the glamping trend to South Africa. We could not find local tents that met our requirements and importing tents was too expensive. We decided to buy a sewing machine and learn how to work with industrial sewing machines and canvas.

With the help of YouTube videos, we tried to familiarise ourselves with industrial sewing machines and canvas.

After eight months of designing, sewing canvas, building furniture and welding couplers, we built a life-size glamping tent in an old asbestos factory building.

Jeroen: ‘Then things went quickly. Investors picked up our plans and with their financial help we set up a production facility in Atlantis. Atlantis has a huge youth unemployment rate, so we trained young, local labourers.

On 1 November 2015, exactly two years after the purchase of our first sewing machine, we opened our first camp at one of the biggest working ostrich farms in Oudtshoorn.

Now we have eight camps at the most beautiful locations in the Western Cape. Since 1 July 2018, there is also a camp in Hazyview, Mpumalanga. All camps can be booked separately, or as a route. Our vision is that guests can experience how an authentic South African family lives in their country, while learning everything about real South African products. As an AfriCamps guest, you will meet the farm owners, become acquainted with their produce and the unique fauna and flora of the area.’

THE FUTURE

Jeroen: ‘The future of AfriCamps is bright. People show a need for meaningful travel experiences where the local people, the country and food can be experienced in an authentic way. AfriCamps offers that experience like no other. With the opening of AfriCamps at Mackers in Hazyview, Mpumalanga, we have taken the first step in our national expansion plan.’

People from Namibia, Botswana and even Zimbabwe have expressed their interest in AfriCamps. Signs are promising that we can make AfriCamps the glamping brand of Southern Africa.

What is the unforgettable memory? The wow moment?

Manou: ‘There are countless! But what really stood out was when I arrived with my family at our first camp in Oudtshoorn. We looked out over the dam and saw the tents looming in the distance under the splendour of the setting sun. An unforgettable feeling.’

Jeroen: ‘The moment our investors decided to invest a serious amount in the wild plans of two boys, a sewing machine and a self-made glamping tent. Manou and I dreamed enormously and all of a sudden there were serious entrepreneurs who dared to dream with us! I got the opportunity to start up a unique company for the second time and, once again, realized that South Africa is the country of unlimited possibilities.’

If you’re visiting AfriCamps at Ingwe in Plettenberg Bay, AfriCamps at Doolhof in Wellington or AfriCamps at Oakhurst in Wilderness soon, you are in for a steamy hot, wood-fired treat.

No, it’s not your delicious pre-booked braai pack, or even marshmallows on the fire – we’re talking about the private outdoor wood-fired hot tubs that can be spotted next to our luxury glamping tents!

Our camps in Wellington and Wilderness offer wood-fired hot tubs next to each tent, and three tents at AfriCamps at Ingwe in Plettenberg Bay have wood-fired hot tubs (make sure to book tents 4, 5 or 6).

We are beyond proud of this local, handmade creation invented together with Buitengewoon Luxury Outdoor Living.

So what makes our tubs so awesome?

Firstly, a wood-fired hot tub is the purest form of relaxation, ideal for those long summer evenings and starry winter nights.
Secondly, they don’t require any electricity, so you can unwind under the stars absolutely guilt free.
We source water from our farm dams and the water goes back into our farm soil.
They are super user-friendly and heat up in 1.5 to 2 hours. Simply start the fire, leave the lid on, stir occasionally to spread the heat and let the brilliant design do the work.
They double as a splash pool in the summer!

AfriCamps at Ingwe

AfriCamps at Ingwe is home to our original bright red hot tubs. These tubs are found next to tent 4, 5 and 6, so make sure you book a hot tub tent. Here our tubs are best enjoyed after a long day of exploring the many activities in the Crags and Tsitsikamma area. You can savour your favourite bottle of wine (the one you got after visiting The Crags’ wine route), overlooking the foresty green surroundings. These eco-friendly tubs are filled with water collected from Whiskey Creek and stored in the property’s dam.

AfriCamps’ hot tubs comfortably fit four people, but our farm owners at AfriCamps at Ingwe have proven that the whole family can fit!

AfriCamps at Ingwe is the perfect location to explore the vibey holiday town of Plettenberg Bay (10 minutes’ drive away) and the quaint village of Natures Valley. This part of the Garden Route is a popular holiday destination as visitors flock to the mind-blowing beaches and ancient forests.

There are few places in South Africa that could be called paradise. One springs to mind, especially for those who are familiar with the popular resort of Plettenberg Bay. Conveniently situated only within half an hour from this town is a gem of a destination, The Crags.

You will be almost overwhelmed with the plethora of activities, adventures and places to visit. A definite favourite for locals and tourists alike is the boutique wine estate, Bramon Wine Estate.As the first wine estate in The Crags, they pioneered vineyards with their first vines, Sauvignon Blanc, resulting in Plettenberg Bay being classified as a Wine of origin region.

Winning awards both nationally and internationally (most recently double gold in 2015), this family run estate lead to the birth of Plettenberg Bay’s own Bubbly and Wine Route

The aspiring owners Peter and Caroline Thorpe hope to create a ‘Sparkling Wine Route’ in the near future. Enjoy the restaurant uniquely set in the vineyards and gardens overlooking the Elephant Sanctuary and Tsitsikamma Mountains; or the cathedral-like cellar.

For the more adventurous, the pristine indigenous forest of AfriCamps at Ingwe offers a haven for plant, bird and animal life and is a very special location to restore your soul. Relish in a pre-hike breakfast or lunch picnic as you are guided along a hiking trail in the natural forest, hearing about the flora and fauna of the region. Or savor celebratory sundowners as part of your hike.

The Eden to Addo Corridor, being the most bio-diverse corridor in the world, passes through a portion of the farm where AfriCamps at Ingwe is situated.

For the intrepid adventurer, the family hike with the Eco Warriors is guaranteed to quench your thirst for adventure and exploration and is also for a good cause, namely the Green Ticket

Orienteering, trail running, mountain biking and horse riding are also among the numerous activities on offer. Or plant a tree in support of the local NPO. For those wanting a restful time, soak up the tranquil sounds of nature, breath in the fresh air and enjoy the spectacular forest, mountains and calm surroundings.Discover delightful water adventures with the Keurbooms River Gorge, Bitou River & Wetland and Keurbooms Lagoon; all offering guided canoeing eco adventures. The Keurbooms River Nature Reserve is a world heritage site with sightings of ververt monkeys, blue duiker, mongoose, grysbok and the elusive leopard. This is best suited for the active traveller who loves the outdoors while having fun on the water. Each of these canoeing adventures offers something distinctive.

Paddle on the lagoon, venture to the other side to visit Keurbooms beach or canoe to either the Bitou or Keurbooms River. In and around the lagoon there is lots of wildlife to be seen, such as flamingos, spoonbills and oyster catchers.

The Keurbooms River Gorge is one of the most beautiful in the world, with numerous secluded beaches amidst the natural forest and high gorge solid with vegetation in an untouched atmosphere

Along the way, settle on white beaches with picnic baskets, a good book and a bottle of wine; while the kids safely explore. The Bitou River section winds along a channel through a wetland system, with plenty of birdlife including South Africa’s national bird, the Blue Crane; and the African Fish Eagle. Enjoy the Keurbooms Lagoon with the beauty of Bird Island and the largest breeding colony of Kelp Gulls, amongst other bird species.

One can easily understand now why this region is named the ‘Jewel of the Garden Route’, with its splendid natural selection of beauty in its forests, beaches, lagoons and magnificent mountains.

Activities at each of our AfriCamps camps

If you are planning to visit one of our AfriCamps camps, you should know that the camps also offer some activities.

AfriCamps at Klein Karoo offers you a sunset game drive and stargazing. You can rent mountain bikes and do hikes at AfriCamps at Pat Busch; and you can play putt-putt and enjoy the nice swimming pools at Africamps at Kam’Bati.

Experience a close encounter of the fauna and flora (excellent bird watching opportunity) of the Little Karoo with our specialist guide. During the drive there is the possibility to view some wildlife and ending the day with a beautiful sunset over the mountains. Thereafter returning to your tent for dinner. Duration +- 2 hours. This is all including drinks and snacks.

Star gazing

Rent a Mountain bike at AfriCamps at Pat Busch

In 2014 we purchased two new Axis 90 mountain bikes with front suspension & Shimano 18 speed parts. These bikes are great quality and very comfortable.Try out some fun mountain bike action over the weekend or explore the Klaasvoogds Valley by cycling to nearby restaurants for breakfast or drinks. Bike rental includes helmets.

Hiking in our private mountains

Beautiful scenery awaits the nature lover! The reserve offers several trails, from mountain fynbos & protea hikes to kloof hikes along wooded streams. Hiking trails are not open to the public – exclusively for the enjoyment of our overnight guests so that guests can walk or hike in complete safety. Each cottage has a detailed map of our trails. Please remember to never hike alone, and to be prepared with enough food & water, good hiking boots, common sense and a jacket. Take nothing but photos and leave nothing but footprints. Hikes take 3-5 hours and can be difficult.

Swim at AfriCamps at Kam’Bati

There are 3 swimming pools and water slides at Kam’Bati. The relatively new (Jan Hagen) landscaped entertainment area is situated at the old conference centre parking area in the middle of the resort. Besides that there are some nice play areas next to it. For the parents there is a new pool lounge to relax in while the kids are playing!

Play putt-putt

Next to the swimming pool you can find the putt-putt hole course, this course consists of 8 holes. This is fun for the kids and adults who can thoroughly enjoy it! Top 5 things to do in Robertson

What is the first thing that comes to mind when we say Robertson? It must be wine. Known for it’s wine tasting and beautiful views, this town in the Western Cape of South Africa offers much more than just your odd wine tasting on route down the coast. Have a look at our list of highlights in the area and extend your stay for a few days to explore this area more thoroughly.

1. Wine time

Robertson is known as a wine valley, so of course, you have to do a wine tour. But which tour do you have to do? We definitely recommend the Viljoensdrift wine tour. 2. Wine Festivals

Every first Thursday of June the Robertson wine valley will host the Wacky Wine Weekend festival. The festival takes place over 4 days and with over 40 wineries participating. Boutique wineries and tourist establishments showcase the valley’s award-winning wines. Thousands of wine lovers come to this lovely festival. For around R150 you are allowed to visit this festival every day. You also get a glass, water and a tasting voucher at every winery.

Another popular festival is called the Wine on the river festival, which will take place every second Friday of October. This festival is known as the “most beautiful wine festival” because this festival takes place on the riverside farm of Goudmyn and gives wine lovers the opportunity to taste more than 250 wines from 30 wineries. The ticket prices are between R90 till R180 a day and R190 till R250 for the entire weekend.

3. Best view of Robertson

Want the best view of Robertson then head over and do the tractor trip in Montague. This tractor trip is Nestled at the foot of the majestic Langeberg mountain range.

“The tractor, pulling its load of sightseers, meanders its way up the Landeberg Mountain, reaching an altitude of 1500m above sea level. On the way up you will have a bird’s eye view of the Koo Valley and, once at the top, you can look down into the Robertson Valley.”

4. Cacti world

If you want to do something different, then you have to visit the world’s largest hedge-maze.This botanical garden is chosen as one of four best botanical gardens in South Africa. A really nice part of this garden is the possibility to do a guided tour, where you can do a ‘’flower tasting’’ and you get to hug a cactus. This entrance has to be booked online here.

5. Fly in the air

If you are looking for an adrenaline rush then you have to go skydiving. Skydive Robertson is one of the longest running Parachute Association of South Africa (PASA) approved dropzone. You can do 2 different falls from 3.500 ft to 11.000 ft. Are you already excited? Book it here.
